Fremont is a city in Nebraska, United States. The population was 25,711 at the 2010 census. Fremont is the county seat of Fremont County. It is part of the Omaha–Council Bluffs–Fremont, NE Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Fremont were fur trappers and traders from Canada and northern Mexico who passed through there on their way to the Missouri River in 1806. In 1847, General Kit Carson discovered gold near present day Fremont while exploring for sheepherding leads in what is today western Nebraska. The discovery led to one of the most significant rushes of people into this new country in history and brought many residents and businesses here including placer gold miners, ranchers, farmers and entrepreneurs such as Fenton Young who founded Young's Cotton Gin Company in 1881. Today's downtown area was built up around two small wagon stores which were located on Capitol Street (now Interstate 80) between First Avenue South and Third Street South in central Fremont during the early days of town growth after gold rush era when goods could be transported quickly by wagon train from east to west across America by means of Stagecoach routes like Kearney-Omaha-Fremont-Norman Railroad Lines service along I-80 corridor which crossed through central Fremont then migrated northeastward parallel to current I-80 corridor providing easy access for passenger vehicles transporting goods between eastern markets such as Omaha or Council Bluffs or western Great Lakes ports of destinations such as Minneapolis or Chicago or even Japan! In 1863, when Fremont became a part of Omaha Township it had 1,500 residents; by 1876 it had 5,000 residents and by 1907 it had 10,000 residents. The cotton gin that began operations here in 1865 has been continuously operating according to its present form since that time; other old businesses still operate within or around the downtown area such as: A&P grocery store (now Macy's), Bookstore Warehouse (now Bemis), Ford dealership/parts store (now JBL Audio & Home Theater), Masonic Temple No 2 (now known as Hecht’s Pharmacy), Laundromat Broadway (later know as IHOP restaurant), KFC fast food restaurant and much more! In 1937 Omaha developer Harry Chandler convinced his father-in-law Sam Payne to donate land for what would become Downtown Mesa which included what are now Grandview Mall(the original name for Mesa Boulevard)Lincoln Financial Field(later known as Joe Robbie Stadium), State Bank Plaza( later known as First National Regency Bank Building/Citizens Bank Plaza ), Pacific Life building( later known as American Savings building ), Peet's candy store , Waffle House restaurants . Today most if not all these buildings still stand including: Grandview mall - current name Mesa Boulevard ; Lincoln Financial Field - current name Joe Robbie Stadium ; State Bank Plaza - current name First National RegencyBank Building/Citizens Bank Plaza ; Pacific Life building - currently being used as an office tower called One America Center; Peet's candy store -currently closed down but still standing next door to American Savings building; Waffle House restaurants - Currently just blocks away from Downtown Mesa
