The most significant EuroAmerican group that settled here were those from Illinois who began arriving around 1847 and soon formed two settlements: North Hennepin County (later Minneapolis) and South Hennepin County (later St Paul). When California reached Nebraska Territory through treaties negotiated between President Polk and Mexico City following Mexican–American War, claims were made for land including present-day Fremont Heights along Lake Michigan where businesses such as Gold Rush dredge sites for gold coins but no actual gold was found until placer mining operations became available nearby beginning in 1859; these operations yielded large amounts of silver which helped finance Manifest Destiny policies promoted by Ulysses S Grant shortly thereafter.
