Fremont is a town in Fremont County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 5,957 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Fremont were the Creeks and Pawnees. They were followed by people who came overland from Illinois and Iowa. In 1854, Major James Kapp founded an artillery company here which he named after himself and his brother-in-law Commodore John C. Perry's Ulysses S. Grant's original home state of Missouri – Kansas City being then the county seat. The company operated until 1861 when it merged with other companies to become the 1st Nebraska Volunteer Infantry Regiment under General Don Carlosemy Ewing (1814–1892). In 1865, Fremont became a territorial town when Nebraska was acquired by Iowa Territory; its first sheriff was Arent Mabee (1838–1901). On July 12, 1870, Fremont incorporated as a city with a population of 3200; it had moved from its original location on the south side of the Platte River on land donated by Jethro Gibbs (1795–1873), one of Omaha’s earliest settlers and namesake for that city’s gritty Commercial District today known as North Park Place East Side. The new city limits stretched along First Street eastward from South Colfax Avenue northward to just west of Interstate 80 where they divided again into two blocks; Fourth Street continuing north while Third Street turned northeast becoming Alameda Boulevard which continues in that direction to Interstate 70 near Kearney Junction
