It became a center for cattle ranching and gun manufacturing. The first firearm manufactured in Fremont was an armory rifle called the “Leatherman” made by George Custer. In 1886, Buffalo Bill Cody visited Fremont and purchased land at what is now South Third Street and Dodge Avenue for his Wild West Showgrounds. This event brought about increased gun production in Fremont as people from all over came to purchase arms for the show. In 1903, the city built its first police station on Second Street. This station served as both headquarters for the department and also functioned as a makeshift arsenal where citizens could store their weapons when not using them on duty or at home. Fremont, Nebraska is a city in the state of Nebraska, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. Fremont is located on the east bank of the Missouri River, bordered by Hastings County to the north and south and Kearney County to the west. It has a total area of 4square miles (11 km²). The first settlers in Fremont arrived in 1854, when John C. Fremont founded what was then called "Fremont Landing." The name was changed to Fremont in 1856 after General James H. Carleton's cavalry destroyed a village near present-day Fremont on March 3, 1856 during his punitive expedition against Native Americans. The town site was bought from the Indians for $5 per acre (1/4 square mile). In 1860, Iowa Territorial Governor George Armstrong Lewis approved construction of a flourmill at what is now Fremont Center Boulevard and Broadway Road. At that time, it was one of only two mills operating in Nebraska. In 1862–1863, Captain Charles Folsom built an oil refinery at what is now West Plains Drive and Interstate 80 northeast of downtown Fremont. The facility produced crude oil until 1984 when it closed due to environmental concerns about its production methods and air quality; however residuals still remain today at several locations around town including along Broadway Road near Mount Hope Cemetery and along I-80 just south of downtown
Fremont was founded in 1868 by James Fremont and his family. Fremont became a small town due to the arrival of railroad traffic. The first store in Fremont opened in 1870. The population of Fremont increased rapidly due to the addition of new businesses and residents from surrounding towns. In 1882, the city was incorporated and growth accelerated again. By 1912, the population had reached its peak with over 100 families living in downtown and more than 20 businesses. However, during World War I, Fremont experienced heavy military production and residential life decreased as people moved away for work or war-time service. After the war, business revived with new construction including a hospital in 1922 and a municipal building completed in 1926. During the late 1920s through early 1930s, strong economic growth occurred as industry boomed but also brought increased social unrest which culminated in an all-out fire that destroyed most of downtown on December 12, 1933
