And so, on this day in 1837, a group of men met at the Winchester Arms Armory to discuss the design and construction of the world’s first gun barrel. They were not sure what they wanted, but they knew where they wanted it to go: up. In less than a year, three barrels had been designed and built by John Brown and Company. The first barrel was completed in May 1838 and fired for the first time on July 20th. The popularity of firearms led to an increase in demand for gun barrels. It was not until 1856 that John Brown & Sons began making rifle barrels with a bore diameter of .50 inches or larger. At this point, guns could be shot at distances up to 350 yards with ease. Gun barrels have continued to be produced in large numbers ever since then- making them one of America’s most common items both domestically and abroad.

The downtown area has been rebuilt many times since then and currently features several high-rise buildings including the University of Nebraska–Fremont's (UNI) main campus and two hotels - the Hughes Hyatt Regency and the Renaissance Place Hotel & Conference Center In addition to its role as county seat for Douglas County until 1900, Fremont also served as home to various government offices over time: courthouse (1865-1900), jail (1900-1910), post office (1865-1970), fire brigade (1872-1974), education department (1910-1920), insurance company headquarters (1925-1950s). Today much of what once comprised Fremont has been replaced by new development or demolished while older structures have been renovated or used as museum/gallery locations. One such example is Old World Trade Center which now contains condos and retail space built on top of an old warehouse building that used to be a bakery and flour mill. Although today’s Fremont does not contain any significant historical sites within its boundaries – aside from UNI’s Main Campus – it still retains some key aspects that make it one of America’s most vibrant cities: its lively nightlife scene with bars stretching all throughout downtown; its rich cultural attractions; ample public transportation options; easy access to both shopping malls in Omaha and Council Bluffs; as well as plenty of restaurants and other businesses that enjoy strong regional support

In 1916, after learning of World War I imminent problems in Europe,Captain James H. Fremont donated land to build a military post near his home so that local citizens could remain safe while their country fought abroad. The post was named Fort Riley after General George Custer who died fighting at Battle of Little Bighorn (1896). In 1951, Fort Riley was decommissioned as part ofProject Concord which eliminated all American military bases within Nebraska statewide. As a result of this decision, most of Fremont's remaining buildings were destroyed or abandoned over the next few decades.
