Fremont is a city in the U.S. state of Nebraska, and the county seat for Elkhorn County. The population was 23,898 at the 2010 census, making it the second-largest city in Elkhorn County after Omaha. Fremont is also one of the largest cities in Nebraska, with a total area of 165 square miles (493 square kilometers). Fremont's history dates back to 1868 when William Bedford Houghton founded what would become Fremont as an agricultural community on the east bank ofthe Missouri River. In 1893 Fremont became a town when it was annexed by Omaha. On November 3, 1912, following approval from the Nebraska Legislature, Fremont became an official city and adopted its current name. The federal government built Fort Donelson on Omaha's edge near downtown to protect settlers who had started arriving there in 1858. The fort served as a military post until 1862 when it was abandoned due to lack of funding and destroyed by fire. A new fort was built on this location in 1870 and named Fort Donelson State Park after President Abraham Lincoln. The park currently contains a museum open to the public which tells about American Indian Wars fought here between 1855 and 1865; as well as other historical events at or around Ft Donelson including operations associated with bomber aircraft manufacturers Douglas Aircraft Co., Bell Helicopter Corp., Continental Airlines Flight 191 which crashed into a ravine near Ft Donelson on July 16th 1947 killing all 49 passengers and crew aboard; Operation Neptune’s Spear which took place during World War II; and combat operations involving 1st Infantry Division troops during Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003-2004). In 1934–35 Colonel John Lubbock organized Territorial Militia units called “The Lubbocks” to patrol rural areas along Interstate 80 outside of Omaha while farmers cultivated their lands west of I-80 within territorial boundaries set forth by Congress during Reconstruction days following slavery’s end in California In 1957–58 major changes were made at Fort Donelson Park with installation of two large AstroTurf football fields complete with artificial turf astroturfing technology that revolutionized recreation for fleets of recreational vehicles used by residents/visitors/drivers alike rather than hand playing field since sod farming ceased about that time . New Multi purpose buildings soon followed housing police officers offices courts etcetera expandable use allowed for decades until replacement needed done after great fire that destroyed most structures Feb 2nd 2002 ; current facility includes City Hall annexe building gymnasium multipurpose hall auditorium theater complex restaurant . The first Europeans to arrive in Fremont, Nebraska were the Spanish. They arrived on a ship called La Plata in 1620 and named the area San Francisco de los Americanos after their newly discovered land. The Spanish built Fort Sanchez on present-day Fremont Boulevard in 1635, which became the capital of California. In 1846, when Nebraska was organized as a state, Fremont was one of its first settlements. A post office was established there in 1851, and by 1865 it had become a city with a population of 30 people. In 1893 Fremont became the seat of county government for Nebraskan County. Fremont experienced significant growth during World War II as an important manufacturing center for munitions and other war materials. The city also played an important role in the development of Las Vegas as a commercial center. After the war, Fremont declined somewhat due to economic recession and suburbanization; however, it has since regained some popularity as a cultural center and educational destination.
