Fremont, Nebraska is a small town in the eastern US state of Nebraska. The population was 1,725 at the 2010 census. Fremont is located in the eastern half of Omaha County and is bordered by Lincoln to the east and south, Beloit to the north, and Elkhorn to the west. The first permanent settler in Fremont was George Fetterman who arrived on a wagon train from Illinois on March 20, 1854. He built a cabin near what is now downtown Fremont. Fremont became an unincorporated community after it was chosen as the site for a post office in 1859. It had been one of five communities that were surveyed for potential Post Office No. 6 in Farnam Township when that township was organized February 15, 1860. Fremont residents Samuel Beavers and John Sibley erected a log schoolhouse in 1863 which served as their village hall until 1915 when they replaced it with a new building which still stands today. In 1868 local resident Wm Hodge donated 160 acres (65 ha) of land near present day Fremont City Limits to become part of present day Omaha County. The county courthouse building at 218 N Main Street was completed in 1889 and served as county seat for about 25 years before being moved to Lincoln because of its larger size and more accommodating facilities than those available at First Ward Hall on State Street adjacent to city limits where county government operated until 1907. The large courthouse complex sat vacant until 1912 when it was leased by the Omaha World-Herald newspaper chain as an advertising stopover while they built their new headquarters nearby on Park Avenue across from Macy's department store which opened in 1914). In response to growing population within city limits and lack of space at First Ward Hall, then County Commissioner James Aitken submitted plans for construction of two parallel roadblocks running east-west along Broadway just outside city limits between Elmwood Avenue (now South Boulevard) and Superior Avenue (now North Boulevard),much like those existing within several cities bordering Omaha including Council Bluffs, Beatrice,Brooklyn Clinton & Hastings Center America Streetside & Business Districts
