This purchase created much controversy as many saw it as another giveaway by Mayor George Tilton upon his election victory that year; however he had promised not to sell any property without voter approval As growth continued throughout the 1920s and 1930s new streets were built such that downtown developed into one large block bounded north by Third Street/Plymouth Avenue east by Fourth Street/main Street south by Seventh Avenue/US Highway 64 and west by Eighth Avenue/township line A public library opened its doors on December 12th 1915 following a donation from Mrs L Hensen along with money she had saved up since moving to Fremont from her home in Council Bluffs two years earlier It remained open until 1951 when it merged with Republican Library Foundation which still operates today On February 5th 1935 referendum results showed majority support among residents for annexation into Omaha; following annexation most businesses closed their doors while others relocated because they did not want to compete against their new neighbor One primary reason given for this relocation spree may have been concerns about water availability as increasing demand led some businesses owners to install wells during this time period especially after discovering oil fields near Rock Island Lake where gas could be produced
