By 1890, Columbus had become an important stop on stagecoaches heading westward through Oklahoma Territory and South Dakota Territory before reaching Denver or Chicago near their respective ends of Illinois Avenue (now Wisconsin Avenue). During this time period there also existed a small but active community of African American residents known as "The Gables". In 1902 Columbus became part ofNebraska following statehood within The United States via passage of another bill entitled "An Act To reorganize certain counties in Nebraska" which folded all previous county boundaries into one larger entity under control of Nebraskan government officials called "the Board."
