In 1881, Columbus was the first city in Nebraska to have an optical store. The store was run by four men- John J. Kiefer, George W. Hutton, Amos L. Morse and Nels C. Richardson- and their assistant, James Kieft. They sold spectacles, goggles and other optical products from a storefront on Third Street until 1889 when they moved to what is now the corner of Fourth and Harrison Streets. In 1898 they opened a second store at 9th Avenue and University Drive which continued to be operated until 1957 when it burned down. That year they also closed their doors forever but their legacy lives on in the stores that continue to be open today as part of the Omaha Optical District chain operated by Amazon.com (www.amazonca). The history of Columbus Optical District goes back before any city even had a blinking neon sign! In 1881, two businessmen named Tilton and Crouse decided to open a store in Columbus due to its growing population of Germans who were moving into the area from Nebraska City (now Lincoln). On July 14th, 1492, Christopher Columbus discovered the New World when he sailed off the coast of Africa in his flagship, San Salvador. At that time, many thought this was a figment of imagination by some Italian Scholar who was lost in his travels and had no way to return home. However, soon afterColumbus' discovery there were reports of other Europeans sailing into unknown waters with similar goals. So it would seem that someone had been exploring these new lands for years before Columbus even set foot on them! In 1524 Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan sailed past what is now Nebraska and reported seeing "a great river flowing through the land" which he named Rio de la Plata (Rivers of God). In 1536 Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto also sighted the same thing and referred to it as La Florida (The Land of Gold). The first European to live permanently in what is now Nebraska was French trader Jean Nicolet who arrived in 1671. He called the area Cascais because of its abundance of trees bearing fruit called cascabel or châteaux de cascabelle. In 1854 Dodge County was organized from part of Lincoln County and named for William Dodge, one of the founders of Omaha. The first post office at Omaha opened in 1865. In 1902 Dutch farmer Hendrik Hudson settled near present day Council Bluffs on the Missouri River opposite Sioux City; he naming the community after himself - Hollandia (Hollandia). This name has been used most recently by members of First Nation tribe member group The Chippewas at their village located about 12 miles east-northeast of Council Bluffs on Iowa's north side. It wasn’t until 1878 when territorial governor Amos Kendall traveled through Nebraska Territory on horseback and saw a claim made for what is now Omaha by Pierre Dorion, an owner/operatorof a trading post along the Platte River near present day Kearneyville. Kendall purchased land from Dorion and erected a stockade around what is today downtown Omaha to stop Indian traders from access to valuable fur trade goods being brought downriver by canoeloads from Canada. This early settlement would become known as “The Townsite” because not only did it contain all OF THE STOCKADE MATERIALS FOR CITY BUILDINGS ON THE NEBRASKA RIVER BUT ALSO ALL THE WOODWORKING TO MAKE IT A STANDARD DOWNTOWN LOCATION! The first known permanent European settlement in what is now Nebraska was on the same spot where Columbus discovered America, in 1492. The land that became Nebraska was part of the Spanish colony of New Mexico. In 1846, when Kansas and Oklahoma were added to the United States, Nebraska Territory became a part of the new state of Kansas. On July 4, 1907, Nebraska became an independent republic within the United States.
