These discoveries along with reports coming back from Mexico about large gold mines in central America provided incentive for more exploration and settlement in what is now Nebraska Territory. The first Europeans to arrive in Nebraska were Frenchmen on September 24th, 1804 during the Louisiana Purchase; these people built Fort Hall on what is today’s Omaha Beach Boulevard near downtown Omaha because they thought it might be possible to trade goods with Native Americans living there (the Sioux Nation). The fort served as a trading post until 1809 when it was abandoned due mainly To Indian attacks which caused most of the buildings/forts around it to fall into disrepair over time). As early as 1828-29 white men started arriving in Nebraska by way of Missouri River expedition under General John Custer who had been ordered by President James K Polk to survey all possible routes across Iowa Territory so as not TO provoke any natives into attacking US forces operating east of the Platte River (this area included much of present day Nebraska territory). By 1830 most of present day Nebraska was claimed by United States including parts of present day Douglas County (which includes Omaha) and Lincoln County (including Lincoln). Finally on January 10th1861 Governor Donelson order troops under Colonel John Nichols march through Dodge City Junction towards Kearny County lines so as not TO encounter any hostile Native Americans living east of Platte River while also lookingForTheEntryOfThe Kansas territorial legislature into Union Territory followingthe admissionofNebraska ontothe US mainland.) Columbus became one of America’s earliest pioneers when he set foot on American soil less than two years after its founding. His arrival coincided with increased interest in areas southward expansion was being pursued by both France and England; both countries wanted access to resources like silver mined in California and Mexican slavery offered potential profits unavailable within their own borders.
