He reached America on July 14, 1492, and for a time thought that he had reached India. When he realized that there was noIndia in those days, he continued his journey eastward and finally arrived at what is today Havana, Cuba on November 5, 1492. In this new world he found an unlocked door to the Orient which had been hidden from him by previous travelers. After reaching Cuba, Columbus turned back homebound again because his ship could not navigate through the stormy seas prevailing at that time. For two years he sailed along the coast of South America before finally arriving in Spain on January 12, 1504. Thereafter a long process of bureaucratic approvals resulted in Columbus being knighted with an Order of Santiago (Strawberry) by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella I of Spain just four months after his return from America! From then until 1536 when Amerigo Vespucci discovered Florida - which would later become Nebraska - Columbus' discovery was considered as definitive as any European explorer's discoveries ever made!

The native population here must have been quite surprised when they heard about Columbus' arrival because within days of his arrival they had set out to capture him and bring him back to Spain! The first thing that Europeans did upon arriving in Nebraska was try to figure out where it exactly was they were going. They did this by looking at maps which weren't too difficult to make since everyone hereabouts knew about latitude and longitude! After consulting with some of their colleagues back home (who may or may not have been accurate), it seemed like Nebraska would fit nicely into the Spanish empire so it wasn't too much trouble for them get started! But unfortunately for them, things didn't go as planned . . . Because America wasn't part of Spain's empire yet (it belonged to Mexico), plenty of Indians fought tooth-and-nail against Spanish settlers even though many believed that God Himself wanted them all dead! Eventually California became part of Mexico after a series of bloody wars between both nations; however Nebraska remained part of England until 1869 when it became a state within the United States! From then on, until World War II when it finally became its own country again (!), it has always been one big mystery as to why Nebraska never joined either side during those many years! Anyway, whatever happened during those several months before Columbus arrived is something we can only guess at because nothing really sticks out in our minds from such an eventful period in our history!
The first white person to set foot on what is now Columbus, Nebraska was William Clark in 1806. The town of Columbus was founded by General John Custer and his army after they defeated the Sioux in a battle near the present day town of Omaha. It is said that General Custer wanted to name the new community after himself, but he was overruled by his friend and fellow general, Ohio Governor George Armstrong Custer. The first store in Columbus opened its doors on December 12, 1806. By 1830, there were nine stores in the town and it had a population of 350 people. The first post office opened in 1827 and it served as an important link between Columbus and nearby Omaha. In 1848, the Missouri Pacific Railroad came throughColumbus and soon took over most of the business operations in the town. By 1870, only six stores remained in Columbus with a population of just 100 people. However, due to factors such as increased railroad travel through central Nebraska and demand for lumber from settlers around Omaha, businesses began to reopen throughout downtown Columbus beginning in the late 1800s. Today, there are still several small businesses active within downtown Columbus including antique store/gallery rantqueen; coffee shop/cafeteria belle & boulangerie; hair salon & beauty parlor; restaurant elizabethanum & bar; plus new construction projects like city hall (opened in 2014) and Stroud Library (opened in 2016).
