Columbus, Nebraska is a small town in eastern Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,977 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lincoln–Bellevue Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named after Christopher Columbus and his crew who sailed into the Gulf of Mexico on their flagship "Nova" in 1492. At the time it was founded, Columbus' landfall would have been within present-day Omaha County and Cass County. The first settler in what is now Columbus was Levi Coffin from Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1854. In 1857 two more settlers were made: John Sibley from Minnesota and George Armstrong Custer from Montana. The Lewis and Clark Expedition passed through Columbus twice on their way to Laramie (Nebraska) in 1845-46; one night they camped on a bluff over the river near modern day Clearwater (Lincoln), then moved on next morning to Fort Belknap (which stands today across the river). When news reached America that General Stephen Kearny had lost his army at Battle of Crook's River during the Mexican–American War, many people emigrated to Nebraska Territory to join him until he returned home victorious three years later with another army. Many other pioneers followed suit including James Murtaugh who plowed a furrow around present day Omaha City while working for Doniphan & Company as an lndustrial labourer in 1865-66 before becoming its president six years later Columbus experienced rapid growth following World War II when numerous manufacturing plants were developed there such as munitions production by Northrop Grumman Corporation and Ford Motor Company among others; however, most of these companies left after Ohio became an independent country following World War II. It wasn’t until 1513 that Columbus finally arrived at Cape Breton Island where he hoped to findth trade goods with Japan or China. However, upon landfall, he ran into resistance from Native Americans who thought that Europeans were coming to take their land away! In order to prove his point (and perhaps win over some of these brave natives),Columbus built an Rememberable structure which still stands today-the “Great Telescope” on Islas Canarias island in Spain! With all of these accomplishments under his belt (including discovering America), it is no wonder why Juana de Castilla chose him as her husband in 1504! From then on onwards, everything changed for Christopher Colombus-he became known as one of the most significant figures in world history!
The first European to set foot on what is now Columbus, Nebraska was Amerigo Vespucci in 1492. The city of Omaha was founded by the American-born Frenchman Louis de Franciscan in 1854. The town of Lincoln had a population of only 100 people when it was founded in 1867, but it quickly grew into a major commercial and manufacturing center. In 1907, the City of Omaha erected a large tower to commemorate its centennial year. The Tower is still standing today and can be seen from many parts of the city.
