The discovery of Columbus, Nebraska in 1854 was a momentous event for the United States. It marked the formal recognition by the U.S. government of what were then British possessions in what is now central and western Nebraska. The town of Columbus was founded on the site of present-day Omaha by General James K. Polk in 1855 as a result of his efforts to find a route to California through Central America. As part of this effort, Polk engaged German explorer Wilhelm Sauer in a long journey from Stuttgart, Germany across North America in search of such a route. On July 8, 1855, Sauer sighted what he thought was an isolated Mormon settlement at Columbus on the Missouri River about 120 miles (200 kilometers) west of Omaha. He reported this information to his superior officer, Captain Friedrich Carlisle von Luedtke, who ordered him to investigate further. Upon arrival at Columbus on July 16th, von Luedtke discovered that there were no Mormons living there and that he had been misled by Sauer into thinking they did exist when he actually intended to explore nearby Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). Von Luedtke decided that it would be more useful to send someone other than Sauer along with him on his next trip across North America and sent Colonel John Fetterman instead. Fetterman reached Omaha on October 20th after spending several months travelling overland from Stuttgart via Council Bluffs and Fort Kearney in Iowa Territory to get there before sailing downriver onNovember 5th aboard the USS Constitution (1797), which had replaced HMS Constance as the Ulysses S. Grant flagship during the American Civil War

The first European settlement was made on the east side of the Platte River by Pierre Le Moyne, a French fur trader and explorer. In about 1629, Englishman John Wingate explored and claimed present-day Omaha for England. It was not until 1795 that Congress created Nebraska as a territory from what is now Iowa Territory. On November 8, 1851, Nebraska became a U.S. state when it was admitted into the Union as the 15th U.S. state.
