The history of bipods can be traced back to the time when Columbus, Nebraska was settled. The area that is now Columbus was first surveyed in 1851 by Captain James A. Cook, who named it for Sir John Hawkins, 1st Baronet of Portsmouth. In 1872, a group of prospectors discovered oil and gas near what is now Columbus. This led to the development of the area around Columbus as a natural resource town. In 1903, Arthur E. Schieffer began construction on what is now the Schieffer Brewery in downtown Columbus. This helped to create an early brewery culture in Columbus and gave rise to some of the city's earliest businesses and entrepreneurs. In 1907, the City Council established a park in downtown Columbus which has been called "the jewel of Omaha." The park was designed by architects Alfred Bierstadt and Edward Durrell and became one of Omaha’s most popular tourist attractions. In 1916, Captain Harry Lewis founded Lewis Aircraft Company inColumbus with his brother-in-law Raymond Morse as president and chief engineer. Lewis Aircraft manufactured military planes during World War I and later produced models such as the PBY Catalina flying boat and PB2 Beaver bomber series. After World War I, Lewis Aircraft company merged with National Aviation Corporation (later Boeing) to form Boeing Airplane Co., Inc., which operated out of Seattle until its sale to Rockwell International in 1997.

The first European to set foot in the present-day Nebraska Territory was Columbus, a Genoese navigator and explorer who sailed his ship, the Pinta, into the Great Lakes region in search of new land. In 1492, Columbus discovered what is now Nebraska and named it for himself, naming three of its counties after him: New Mexico, Arizona, and Iowa. In 1854, when the United States acquired Nebraska from Mexico as part of Annexation of Texas during the Mexican-American War, President James K. Polk ordered Governor John D. Rockefeller to survey the territory for potential homesteading sites. The results of this survey led to the founding of Cedar Rapids and Omaha by Rockefeller's son-in-law Jesse Ladd on Valentine's Day 1855. The towns were renamed Columbus because they lay on or near what is now Interstate 80 (the old US Highway 1). Columbus has been an important town in central Nebraska since its inception. It served as a commercial center for early farmers and ranchers who used its location on the Great Lakes region for trade with other parts of America and Europe. Located at one time between Chicago and Omaha City limits, Columbus was also a center of education; local schools taught students from Kindergarten through high school until World War II when statehood made education available statewide. After World War II most Colombians left their homes country to pursue opportunities in North America but some remain in town today working various trades including construction labor or service jobs within I-80 corridor communities like Waterloo or Kearney
