Bellevue is a small town in the Nebraska state of Nebraska, located on the border of Kearney and Riley counties. The population was 1,817 at the 2010 census. Bellevue is one of six towns in Riley County. It lies along Interstate 80 between Omaha and Lincoln, about 25 miles northeast of those cities. The Bellevue post office opened in 1875 and closed in 1971. The first large store in Bellevue was built by James Ahern on Main Street in 1902. In 1907, Harry Smith opened a grocery store on Third Street within sight of the original Post Office building which served as its until 1951 when it moved to First Avenue NE. In 1915, J.P. Sager opened a flour mill here which continued producing flour until 1959 when it became an IMAX theater complex called "Sager Place". From 1955-1966 it was operated by Menard-Kreischer Paper Company as "Bellevue Mills". Brentwood Fenton founded Bellevue High School (now Bellevue Community High School) in 1922; he also started the first municipal water system west of Iowa City with two systems - one for town residents and one for farmhands - and installed a flushing toilet for all public buildings in 1923. He also donated land to build what is now Prairie View A&M University's campus north of Bellevue Boulevard; today that area includes much of downtown Bellevue while another portion is included within the current campus boundaries of UI Carbondale In 1935, Clarence King established King Dairy which still operates outbuildings near the intersection of Cedar Road and Third Street (now part of Elmendorf Drive). King also donated land to build what is now UI Westminster College's main campus south east corner Elmendorf Drive/Third Street; that area includes much of downtown Westminster including its football stadium currently known as Beaver Stadium In 1941 Drury erected his family home on Centerpoint Circle at 5010 South Main Street ("BellevUE" or "Drury Place"). That house served as both his home office from 1941-1945 (the operation began with only three employees - Drury himself, his secretary Alice Beierwaldt, and accountant Harry Capps) while he finished construction on Bel Air experimental airfield just outside town limits – later known as Nellis AFB – during World War II; after 1945 Drury resided at Nellis AFB until his death there in 1978 bellevurenebraskahistory
