The first recorded use of a laser weapon in the area was on May 25, 1966 when two Bellevue High School students used a laser pointer to shoot an apple off their teacher's desk during class. On October 1, 1973, Bellevue police officer Gary Sievers used his cruiser's laser light to stop and investigate a stolen car that had driven into town from Dodge City. In 1984 Bellevue Police Officer Don Hennessey fired his patrol rifle at an animal after it had been attacking people and cars in the neighborhood for several days. In 1998 BellevUE Officer Tim Collins used a handgun to shoot and kill one of three bandits who had broken into a home in town. In 2002 Bellevue Police Officers Dustin Brown and John Bostic shooting back at suspects while they were escaping after robbing another house resulted in the death of one suspect and injury to four others
Bellevue is a town in central Nebraska, United States. The population was 5,384 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Douglas County. Bellevue was founded in 1881 by men from Iowa and Minnesota as a cotton gin and lumber town. The town became an agricultural center after settlers developed land for farming around the discovery of oil in 1901. Bellevue's largest employer until it closed in 2003 was its local government, which had been formed when Douglas County was created. In 2006, Bellevue voters passed a referendum to become an incorporated city. Bellevue is located at (41.827493, -98.601765). It occupies most of Douglas County, with only a small part extending into Grant County to the south-west and eastwards; this strip of territory is bordered on the north-east by Omaha and on the south by Lincoln. According to the 2010 census, Bellevue has a total area of , all of it land: . Of this land, (or 98%) consists of undivided rural farmssteads dating back to before 1880; these are generally wide open prairies with few buildings or trees due to their remoteness from major urban areas and lack of transportation options nearby; much remains unaltered since then despite steady population growth over recent decades (BellevUE's current population is 8% more than it was 20 years ago!). The eastern edge of Bellevue harbor contains some very shallow water that forms part of Omaha Harbor’s natural disposal system – one result being that much bluffland nearshore faces down onto Queen Elizabeth Way during high tide due to its low elevation above water level!
