Bellevue is a town in Nebraska, United States. The population was 4,818 at the 2000 census. Bellevue is bordered by Kearney to the north and east, Omaha to the south and west, and Hastings to the northwest. The first settlers in what would become Bellevue arrived in 1868 when George Barnes purchased 640 acres (253 hectares) of land east of Kearney. Barnes named his new tract "Bellevue" after the French city of Le Ville de Belleville in France. The community began growth quickly and by 1870 had a total population of just over 100 people. By 1888, Bellevue had grown so large that it became its own city with a Mayor/Council system under which residents were responsible for all aspects of their lives from public works to policing. In 2002, Bellevue passed an ordinance establishing itself as an official micropolitan area consisting of all six counties within its borders- Douglas County on the east side of town; Carter County on the west side; Armstrong County on the north side; Nebraskan Lincoln County on top of Hill Country Regional Airport; Parsons County across Nebraska border on South Dakota state line; and Wabash County in Illinois on Illinois state line
