Bellevue is a city in the U.S. state of Nebraska, located on the south bank of the Missouri River. The population was 21,536 at the 2010 census. Bellevue is one of three cities in Lincoln County and is part of the Omaha–Council Bluffs metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Bellevue were Paleo-Indians who hunted and gathered game near present-day Bellevue and other areas along the South Fork of the Missouri River. Their descendants still live in that area today as Lakota Sioux Nation members known as "Bighorn" people. A post office called Bellevue was established in 1868, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1943. In 1892, John Wittemeyer bought 640 acres (2 km²) northeast of Bellevue east of Council Bluffs for $8,000 from Jesse Benton Bigham and built a large house called "Bellevue". Wittemeyer became an early leader of eastern Nebraska's grain belt economy; he developed a network of irrigation systems that helped bring about permanent corn growing in Nebraska’s central Great Plains region. He also played an important role in developing Lincoln County into one of America’s most prosperous counties during this time period In 1923, Wittemeyer donated land for what would become downtown Bellevue; he named streets after himself, his wife Anna (née Kapp), his children Milton Hildebrandt Wittemeyer (1915–2009), Adeline Katherine Cook (born 1916) and their husbands Franklin Denny (1896–1987) and Orville Freeman Denny Jr.(1902–1985). At that time downtown Bellevue had only two blocks northward on Pearl Street from what is now Third Avenue – making it one of America’s earliest commercial districts with extensive shopping opportunities for both residents and visitors alike In 1955, when Interstate 80 was completed through Lincoln County, much of downtown Bellevue changed hands; some properties reverted back to their original owners while others went through various transformations including becoming mixed-use housing developments such as Elmwood Park or North Side Place before eventually returning to their previous uses as agricultural land or residential neighborhoods later that decade With its growth came increased demand for public services such as parks and libraries but also significant traffic congestion which led to passage by lawmakers during the early 1960s of legislation creating an interstate junction at I-80/US 31 near downtown which would have allowed easy access by drivers without having to navigate heavy traffic Congestion pricing regulations were put into place shortly thereafter resulting in increased business activity around I-80/US 31 which has resulted Boulevard de la Paix becoming a popular tourist destination since then . In 1997 when Lincoln Consolidated School District merged with other nearby school districts forming Omaha City School District #1 parentification began allowing students from Eastside Elementary School housed within Eastside Middle School boundary to attend Central High School underbaraing name 'BellevUE'
