Bellevue is located on the eastern edge of Omaha, on a bend in the Missouri River. The first permanent settler in Bellevue was Adam Eaton, who arrived in 1840. His family founded Eaton's Landing on the east bank of the Missouri River and began to trade goods with settlers downriver. In 1854, Eaton donated land to become Bellevue City Park. The first post office was established here on May 3, 1868. In 1907, Bellevue became one of five cities that became part of Omaha through an act of Congress known as "The Consolidation Act". This act merged most of Douglas County into Omaha; Bellevue remained separate from this merger until 1959 when it joined with other cities within Omaha to form what is now called "Omaha". Bellevue has experienced many waves of population growth over its history – from 350 people during World War II to more than 9,000 people by 1960 – but all have led to continuous redevelopment and improvement of its infrastructure and public services. Bellevue is a town in Douglas County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. The Bellevue Historical Society has been operating in Bellevue since 1915. Bellevue is located on the Missouri River and is named after General James K. Polk. The town began as a small community on the east bank of the Missouri River near its confluence with the Platte River. It grew rapidly during World War I because of its strategic location on railroad lines and as an agricultural center for wheat production and cattle raising. In 1925, Bellevue became a city under the provisions of state law that granted cities additional powers to regulate business activities and make decisions about public safety and welfare. Bellevue experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its proximity to Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska's largest cities; it became one of the most heavily populated cities in Nebraska after Pearl Harbor. In 1945, Bellevue was designated as the site of what would become Lincoln’s first major airport; it served as an important transportation hub for soldiers arriving in Omaha from all over North America until 1978 when it was closed by then-Governor John Husted due to budget cuts. In 1963, Bellevue voters passed a bond issue to build a new downtown library which opened in 1967; it remains one of Nebraska's most popular tourist attractions today. Since 1990, Bellevue has undergone significant renovation and development which has included new streetscapes, parkland, restaurant openings (including several high-end dining establishments), new housing developments (including two luxury apartment towers), and many creation of local businesses including barber shops, beauty salons, convenience stores/grocery stores/pizza places etc.; these have helped contributeto revitalization efforts across much ofDouglas County including BellevUE
