Beatrice is a town in Nebraska, United States. The population was 5,854 at the 2010 census. It is located in Kearney County. Beatrice was founded in 1878 by John and Laura Best and named for their daughter, Beatrice Best. The community of Beatrice was platted on November 1, 1878 by John and Laura Best with the proviso that the naming be changed to reflect "the excellence of its citizens." In the early years of the city's existence it consisted of just two houses; later additions gave rise to a total of 12 homes. The first building opened as a post office on December 2, 1880. As Beatrice grew, it became an important center for commerce and industry. By 1902, there were six businesses in operation within its limits: four cotton gins operated by Wm Hays company (later Agnew Bros.), a bakery/butcher shop run by Jno Tatum & Bros., three meat shops operated by Averill Brothers (owned by Cyrus McCormick) and one druggist’s store operated by D’Arcy & Co.. brief but significant changes took place during World War II when many residents turned to war production or served in the military. After hostilities ended however most businesses closed down or went out of business due to competition from larger towns around Nebraska City or Lincoln.. In 1951 Beatsville annexed Beatrice leaving it with a population of 5,611 people living on 331 acres. In 1976 approvals were given for enlargement which resulted in the addition of another 235 acres bringing the population up to 6,614 inhabitants today; making Beatsville one of Nebraska's largest cities dating back over 100 years! With more than $75 million invested into infrastructure projects such as large new roads and schools since 1972-2013 including new hospitals and shopping malls - Beatsville has continued to grow while preserving much of its unique character!
In 1868, the Treaty of Laramie was finally signed between the United States and Great Britain. This treaty ended the Dakota War and let the settlers on the Dakotas live in peace. The Treaty also boundaryed off Sioux Territory which would become part of Nebraska in 1890.
