Beatrice, Nebraska is a small town in eastern Nebraska. It was founded in 1881 by the merger of two smaller towns, Beatrice and Hutchinson. The population of Beatrice was 1,826 at the 2010 census. Beatrice is located in east-central Nebraska and bordered by Iowa on the north, Illinois on the east, and South Dakota on the south. It has a total area of , of which is land and is water. The climate in Beatrice is classified as "continental". The average temperature for July is 41 degrees F (5 degrees C), while the average temperature for January is −15 degrees F (−26 degrees C). According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Beatrice has a humid continental climate. "According to some reports," wrote historian David Hackett Fischer in his book "Nebraska: A History", "the history of this place goes back farther than any other small town in eastern Nebraska." In 1881, two smaller towns merged to form one larger community - Beatrice. He continued: "Between them they had built up their little hamlet into what it now stands - an unincorporated community with a population of 1,826 people as of 2010." That same year, Hutchinson formed part of that merger as well. At that time there were only three businesses within beatrice limits - groceries store, hardware store and ice cream parlor - but they all grew rapidly due to trade with nearby communities such as Hastings or Rockford. By 1910 there were eleven businesses operating within beatrice boundaries; six grocery stores (including one operated by Mrs. John Hodge), four hardware stores (including one run by Wm., Lillie Daugherty’s brother) and one ice cream parlor (operated by Mrs. Harry Sievers). In addition to its five incorporated cities/townships – Hastings, Galesburg Heights, North Platte Springs/Hutchinsonville/Sioux City/New Prague – beatsie also included 12 unincorporated villages including Alpine Village(population 712), Bearden(population 3), Birney(population 527), Cannon Ball(population 697), Deadwood(population 608), Elkader(Population 449), Elkhorn Heights( Population 346) Eudora Heights( Population 524) infiltrate “a region which during Reconstruction became known as ‘The Great Sioux Nation’ because so many Sioux lived thereabouts” according’ to David Hackett Fischer . Other reports place this section most likely adjacent to Fort Kearny where soldiers arrived after General Dodge's campaign against Sitting Bull" (Fischer 9). This event is also known as "The Great Sioux War." In 1875, President Ulysses S. Grant ordered all Native Americans living in Nebraska be relocated to other states or killed. The order caused significant unrest among the local population which eventually led to Beatrice's incorporation as an official city in 1889. Over time,Beatrice has helped contribute significantly to both its community and state culture. For example, Beatrice has been home to many professional athletes, including four wrestlers who competed at the 1951 T-Bones Classic; two business owners who developed Omaha's first major shopping center; and six governors who have served in Nebraska since World War II. In addition, Beatrice has been home to important landmarks such as Lincoln High School (now Lincoln Community College) and First United Methodist Church (now Christ Episcopal Cathedral). A variety of events have taken place throughout history at Beatrice that have left their mark on both the town and its citizens: such as summer services at First United Methodist Church (now Christ Episcopal Cathedral), carnivals sponsored by local businesses, outdoor concerts featuring popular music acts like Beatles®, Stones®, Jethro Tull®, & Led Zeppelin®, etc., pancake breakfast meetings organized by high school students during National School Week (usually held on Saturday mornings), Heritage Days celebration every July that includes exhibits about various aspects of Nebraska history from cultural significance through current day issues; special events/parades honoring noteworthy figures like Mayor Bob Devaney or Governor Don Nelson; etc.—all designed specifically for Residents/Residents’ Associations/Community Groups located within walking distance or less from downtownBeatrice!
