Beatrice is a small town in Douglas County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 913 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lincoln–Council Bluffs, NE-IA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Beatrice post office was established in 1881, and remained in operation until it closed on November 30, 2013. The community name may be derived from the Beatrice Formation which includes many well known surface strata of the Rocky Mountains including the Arapaho and Omaha beds. Beatrice also features some of the older stone quarries still active in Nebraska today such as Keystone Cutters and Keystone quarry No. 2 which are both located on North Main Street near the high school. Beatrice was platted in 1881 by Roy Matson and James Wolkowsky under their agreement to divide land that had been donated by Isaac Perkins who had purchased the entire township from John Dickson in 1853 for $4 per acre ($5600 total). As one of just a few townships organized before Nebraska statehood, Beatrice became an important center for local commerce with its buildings dating back to when Indian Removal began in 1830 which led to much development within what would become Douglas County during this time period like mills, gristmills & stockyards along with brickmaking & other early industrial endeavors. The first settler arrived here around 1857/58 when Lewis Hanks bought 320 acres (12 km²) east of present day Beatrice from David Laddsberry & family for $6 per acre ($9600 total). This included all or part of what would become north side of town including William’s Bakery Building which can still be seen today across Elm Street next door to Holy Cross Catholic Church where pioneer Fenton White once celebrated Mass before moving his bakery out into business later that same year as Father White’s Bakerystall #2 also located on Elm Street across from present day First Baptist Church down memory Lane past current day Interstate 80 off exit 15A about 3/4 mile (1 km) east of current day Third Avenue intersection. With only 2 miles (3 km) between village & major center of Douglas County government at Council Bluffs (population 25000), beatitude quickly grew into one of most important indigenous settlements within this large area during those early days following initial contact by white settlers although no formal treaty or land purchase was ever made between these two groups resulting instead primarily through trading goods back and forth typically over open country crossings like those present-day US Highway 20 crossing just southwest of Beatrice now home to several businesses such as Midas Automotive Inc., George’s Chinese restaurant and Pat Tillman Sporting Goods Store prior to erection / construction OF THE FIRST SCHOOL IN BEATRICE ON MAY 4th 1861 BY JAMES KELLEY IT WAS KNOWN AS “ST GEORGE”S SCHOOL BECAUSE THAT IS WHERE HE STOPPED PLAYING WITH HIS NINE YEAR OLD SON FRANKLIN AFTER PLAYING WITH HIM AT THE PARK NEXT DOOR ALSO IN THE COMMUNITY . However due largely toBrigham Young's efforts missionary work inside America thru his church Deseret News reported on December 5th 1861 "At a recent meeting called by President Brigham Young we learned that four hundred pupils have already been baptized at Nauvoo" so despite good intentions many residents did not convert leading eventually exponential growth within this fledgling community while nearby Council Bluffs rapidly expanded becoming an even more important commercial center soon overtakingbeatitude's importance only retaining status as a small rural community until 1935 when it formally merged into Douglas County government causing its rapid growth then sudden decline precipitating another massive population loss makingBeatrice one last significant rural community resident before finally disbanding circa 1990 Census listings . Since its founding, Beatrice has been home to many notable people including cattle ranchers Edwin and Bernice Sweet, teacher Belle Crouse, and politician Tom Moody. In 1916, beatrice became part of the Union County School District; it remained an independent district until 1963 when it merged with Lincoln County School District. The community also hosted a small fair each year until 1974 when it merged with Garden City Unified School District. Today, Beatrice is known for its downtown area which features several businesses such as Barnes & Noble and Starbucks. It is also home to numerous parks such as Stadium Park and Memorial Park which provide opportunities for children and adults to enjoy nature while enjoying cooked food or beer from local breweries.
The first European to visit Beatrice was a French nobleman, the Marquis de Lafayette, in 1837. He and his wife traveled through Nebraska and explored the area before returning to France. The town of Beatrice was founded by settlers in 1839, and it became an important stop on the Santa Fe Trail. The city hosted a exposition in 1851 that showcased American products and services. In 1865, Nebraska became a state and Beatrice became its capital. During World War II, the city played an important role as a military base for the United States.
