Missoula, Montana is home to the largest concentration of scopes in the Western hemisphere. The city has been a center for telescope manufacture and ownership since before the turn of the century. The city's rich history with optics goes back to 1881, when Cyrus McCormick and Company founded their first optical business in Missoula. A few years later, they built a new factory in what is now downtown Missoula to produce lenses and telescopes. In 1925, America's first major telescope was erected in Missoula by Lewis Ransom and Sons of America. This telescope remains one of the most famous landmarks in Missoula today. From 1905-1927, use of scopes increased rapidly at Mount Stromness National Observatory on Mt. Rushmore National Monument in South Dakota because its director, Arthur Eddington, realized that it offered an unmatched view of the night sky across all parts of North America including Canada and Mexico. In 1928-1929, astronomers at both Mount Stromness andMount Wilson made photographic observations of Comet Hale-Bopp using large Schmidt cameras mounted on observatories within hours' observation range from each other - making comet detection possible even beyond Earth's atmosphere! These early observations are credited with helping lead to our current understanding about comets as well as providing important clues about their evolution over time! In 1938-1945,the United States Military used large American scopes located throughout Japan during World War II for bombing raids against military targets inside Japan as part of their "The Manhattan Project". Some examples are: KAIST (Korea Astronomy Satellite), YASUHARA (Yamato TV astronomical satellite), MUKSAT (Mukden Radio Astronomy Satellite), etc... Many thanks go out to Univision Corporation for donating these patriotically imported Japanese instruments which were instrumental in helping us understand more about our cosmic neighbors! Since WWII many people have brought their own large telescopes into town to use while living within easy driving distance or taking short trips out into surrounding rural areas where there are no amateur telescopes available whatsoever! With advances in technology such as digital image capture devices and high quality digital video gear improving all the time (!), more people are becoming interested not only in astronomy but also photography and videography – resulting in an increase in amateur photo/videography observing programs being hosted by local clubs or organizations! There’s no doubt that Mississippi Valley Amateur Radio Association will continue hosting popular observing nights through 2019 despite having less than 20 members!!! So much has changed over these past few decades that it would be difficult to recount everything here – suffice it to say that scoping has come a long way;Missoula is home to some world class astronomical institutions as well as plenty of amateurs who enjoy watching them operate from around town!
