Missoula, Montana is a city in the U.S. state of Montana and the county seat of Missoula County. The population was 57,934 at the 2010 census,[1] making it the most populous city in Missoula County. It is also the second-largest city in Montana after Bozeman. The first known inhabitants of what is now Missoula were the Hidatsas, who built their village on Iron Hill about 1050 AD. A Foothills Indian Tribe occupied what became Missoula about 1400 AD until they were supplanted by European settlers around 1800. Fort Laprai was founded in 1859 by Order of the Colorado Rangers captain James Biddle and fur trader Orion Cooke to protect wagon trains traveling through this area, which had been discovered by Cooke during his long journey from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania to California via Oregon Trail route 123. In 1865, General George Armstrong Custer's Seventh Cavalry camped on Powder River near present-day Missoula while invading Northern Mexico; details of his battle with Apache Chief Victoriano Aguirre are still disputed and unconfirmed today but it is believed that some or all soldiers died as a result of an encounter with this fierce enemy group located northwest of modern day Phoenix Arizona Territory then west to east along US eighty-six highway (later I-5). One contemporary account says that "the troopers emerged from their horses suddenly like leopards from a carcass[!] They came down upon [Aguirre]'s party with such force that they killed or drove off all but one man".[2][3][4] In 1876 Doniphan & Reid opened up a feed mill here which processed coal for local power companies until 1935 when dam construction began upstream at Lewiston Lake resulting in high levels of water pollution.[5][6] In 1945, followup air raids against Japan destroyed much residential housing within Hiroshima Prefecture including many churches and religious institutions; however not damage occurred to missoula urban areas such as Ginowan(中央村) where many Japanese people had lived[7]. This led United States Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) contractors William Compton and Orville Freeman to begin draining part of Lewiston Lake for safety reasons soon thereafter; this operation would later be renamed “Operation Crossroads” due its major impact on downtown missoula[8]. By 1951 atmospheric testing results showed evidence nuclear materials had been released over central missoula causing residents there including Mr. Kappelman to demand government action towards public health hazard associated with atomic bombing weeks prior; this culminated into creation of Atomic Radiation Health Administration (ARHA) effective July 1st 1951 under Drs Julius Nyquist, Snyman Warshawski & Wexler directorate.[9] In 1957 protest actions erupted following closure/merging/privatization by Monsanto Company operations adjacent river road bridge across Missouri River – these protests led eventually to Monsanto company dissolution effective Decatur Mills Incorporated June 15th 1957 providing seed production infrastructure for nearby Billings Agricultural Area . All entities associated with Monsanto are currently registered trademark holders under license from US Fish and Wildlife Service National Trademark Office..
