In 1868, when Missoula became an independent city through ratification of legislation created by Congress following Sixty-Third Congression debate over western territorial claims involving indigenous peoples (the Dene being among them), it was part of what would become Eastern Montana Territory concurrent with Yellowstone National Park becoming a national park effective July 1st that year.
