In Missoula, Montana, on November 14, 1879, the first public gun target shooting event was held. The target shooters were attracted to the opportunity to shoot at a moving target and practice their marksmanship. The event was organized by Colonel John H. Maynard and consisted of three rounds at 10 yards each. The first round was fired from a prone position while the second round was shot from standing positions. The third round was fired from a high ground position and missed its intended target by about 20 feet. The success of this event led to other publicgun targets events being held throughout the state. These events typically lasted one or two days and involved up to 50 participants in total. Participants used any type of rifle or shotgun for shooting at targets made of paper, wood, cloth or metal cans filled with BBs. As early as 1846 France had begun exporting buffalo meat from central Canada via wagon trains across sections of Dakota Territory then newly created off western Nebraska; these shipments stopped around 1850 when discovery of gold led many ranchers away from buffalo hunting towards mining operations which were becoming more prevalent in this region following discoveries at Bullhead City (later Boise) and Sutro Mesa (now Sacramento). A post office called Wolkerville had been established at Fishers Fork Creek west of present day Helena on August 10th 1851 by John Fetterman after his brother-in-law Samuel Wilkinson opened a store there two months earlier; this location would later be renamed Missoula due to its similarity to nearby Frenchtown (present day Omaha) which had also recently come into existence as a result of influxes OF Americans fleeing slavery southward following Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation on January 1st 1863. However it remains unclear who actually erected the first wooden building in what is now downtown Missoula; contemporary reports claim that either local pioneer David Thompson or local trader George Armstrong Custer could have claimed credit for this achievement although no definitive evidence exists support either claim beyond question*. It is located on the Missoula River near its confluence with the Flathead River. The first Europeans to visit what is now Missoula were fur traders from Canada who crossed over the Rocky Mountains in 1805 and 1806.
