The first Europeans to enter what is now Missoula were fur traders from Edmonton, Canada in 1859. At that time there were no towns or villages in this area and only scattered Indian camps. In 1861 the local legislature approved a plat for the town on present-day Central Avenue & Park Street with land grants totaling 640 acres (240 hectares). This was followed by another plat for MISSOULA on April 15th1863 with 1,544 acres (500 hectares). By 1865 MISSOULA had developed into a small village numbering about fifty residents when it became Capitol Hill Station on October 17th 1870 due to new legislation giving more voting rights to women! In 1875 gold was discovered near missoula and soon businesses operations began booming due to increased traffic coming through town from mining camps located around Bullhead City and Fort Peck Lake along I-15 approximately 20 miles east of missoula. This led to missoulahs nickname "Gilded Age Capital" because much money changed handsrelatedtominingandcommerce during these years! With such rapid growth came social unrest however as economic prosperity often brought little opportunity for average citizens while those behindthescenes wielded power at will! A fire destroyed much business activity early in 1886 but instead caused many residents to flock back downtown which started anew as an entertainment district full of dance halls, theaters and other nightlife venues until 1906 when prohibition made alcohol illegal throughout most of America!. Businesses still reopened but men now outnumbered women so prostitution thrived unchecked!. A major event leading upto prohibition was the nationally televised explosive debate between Senators James Buchanan (D-KY) & Andrew Johnson(R-TX) over whether or not liquor should be taxed like property taxes resultinginthe infamous Wild West Klondike Gold Rush! On January 16th 1911 a groupofteenaged boys ignited dynamite hidden inside an abandoned mine deep inside north central Montana Territory after raiding another nearby camp during a drunken party!, detonating explosives resultinginthe largest accidental explosion in American History!!!!!!missouri's reputation forever changed due to this disastrous event!!!!!
