Kalispell is part of the Great Falls, Montana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Kalispell were Native Americans who hunted and gathered game near the confluence of the Little Missouri and Big Missouri rivers. In 1877, prospectors traveling through Arapaho County stopped in this area for water when they discovered rich gold mines nearby. The town got its name from an Indian word meaning "place where there are no trees." The first post office was established at Kalispell on July 10, 1879. The first store opened in 1880 and became one of the most successful businesses in town until it closed its doors in 1903 because of Prohibition. After prohibition ended, Kalispell began to experience rapid growth as a result of new industries such as construction materials, aluminum smelting and publishing interests attracted people to the town during this time period. In 1915, Arapaho County was organized into two divisions; eastern Arapaho County became part of Lewis & Clark County while western Arapaho County became part of Butte County. However, following a referendum held by residents within eastern Aropahocounty to unify with Lewis & Clark Countys efforts to annex land east of Grand Forks Creek into their county—a move that would have increased power within Lewis & Clark County—the vote failed by just over 2-to-1 due to landowner opposition. After years of negotiation between both counties over annexation laws passed by the state Legislature which did not recognize either division's existence—an issue that came up again after World War II when much new acreage went under federal jurisdiction—the two counties finally merged on February 15, 1959 into what is now known as Arapaho County according to current law。 Although having existed for only sixty years prior to its merger with Lewis & Clark Countys neighboring district—Aropahocounty had already grown larger than either county could handle without additional jurisdictionalion from state lawmakers—Kalispell remains one of America’s oldest continuously inhabited towns located within a contiguous U.S.-based county system.—Today it’s home to more than 1,000 people who come together every day for community events such as arts festivals and summer picnics.—
