When the white party got too close to the Indians, they began to shoot indiscriminately at them. This caused great panic among the natives and eventually led to their deaths. The event is generally considered one of the most infamous massacres in American history.
Kalispell, Montana is a small town in the western United States. The population was 711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the banks of the Missouri River. The city was founded in 1877 by gold miners, and during its heyday it had a population of over 10,000 people. However, since then Kalispell has experienced only modest growth. Today, it has a population of about 500 people and functions as a primarily agricultural community. The city was named after General George Armstrong Custer who fought in the American Civil War and later served as lieutenant general in the Indian Wars. In 1877, when he first arrived in Kalispell to prospect for gold, Custer found that there were already residents here who called themselves "Cumberland". Soon enough, other settlers came to Kalispell and soon there were three hotels and two stores. By 1879, all but one of the original buildings had been erected and business was booming. However, by 1890 things had started to unravel for Kalispell; with silver prices continuing to drop substantially following year's discovery of significant quantities near Promontory City (now Aberdeen), Montana Territory began to lose interest in mining along its border with Dakota Territory.. This contributed significantly to what is now known as the "Kalispell Silver Boom" which lasted from 1888-1892 according to some historians; however others claim that this period wasn't particularly productive due largely to low silver prices throughout much of America at that time[1]. Nevertheless despite this setback local merchants slowly reopened their businesses until finally leveling off around 1900[2]. However even though silver prices stabilized around this time most locals chose not to return back into mining because they felt it would be too difficult given competition from more easily accessible veins elsewhere[3], instead preferring instead To stay rural where access to land, water resources & markets remained strong[4]. Some notable events during this time include: 1) The opening ofriverfront park in 1895 which helped revive downtown areas 2) Pioneer Day parade held every July 4th 3) First municipal election held on November 3rd 1865 – won by Democrat John Lillie (later US Senator from Montana)[5] 4) Kansas Pacific Railway built tracks through town 6 miles south 7 miles east making transportation much easier 5) First radio station licensed - KPLZ 107 FM(today KGKA 990 AM)] 6) Second Congregational church built 8 miles NW 9 miles SE

At its height, Kalispell boasted a population of 12,000 people; however, it quickly began to decline due to fierce competition from surrounding towns and villages over land grants and profit from copper mining operations that took off in nearby Butte County after President Grover Cleveland opened up new territory west of Montana in 1872. With mining activity moving away from Kalispell during the late 19th century, little else happened there until World War II when it underwent an explosive growth due to post-World War II demand for aluminum products brought about by developments along Interstate 80 through central Montana
