Over time, butte County grew rapidly becoming one of Montana's most prominent counties with its natural resources as well as its large population center located just outside of downtown Kalispell on two main streets: Fifth Street and Main Street In 1916 Butte County became part of what would become Montana Territory which included all present day North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming plus portions of Arizona and Utah. In 1912 Kalispel had a population only slightly larger than today's with only two businesses open: a general store operated by Averill Henson and an hotel run by Gifford Pinchot It wasn't until 1925 when voters approved addingKalispell as a city limits precinct within Butte County that things started changing quickly for this remote corner of North America In 1955 it became apparent that ifButteCountywas goingTo keep growingitwouldneeda new courthouse so plans were made to build one right nexttothe existing courthouse on First Avenue S .OnMay 13th1955the groundbreakingforthenew courthouse tookplaceand after yearsof planning construction finally beganon November 5th 1959 . Kalispell was founded in 1883 by George Armstrong Custer and was named after his native land, Káalispell, Scotland. The first post office in Kalispell opened in 1885. In 1903, Kalispell became part of the newly created Missoula County. The first settlers were John A. Macdonald and his family from Canada who arrived on a trading schooner called "Empire" on July 5, 1883. The community rapidly grew with many new businesses opening up including a hardware store, bakery, millinery and grocery store before World War I disrupted those industries and they all closed down together except for the hardware store which reopened as an ice cream parlor during World War II. During the late 19th century there were several schools but no hospitals or clinics so health care infrastructure wasn't really developed until after World War II when it began to grow rapidly due to advances in technology such as antibiotics that made treatment available to patients much earlier than ever before In 1890-1891 an amendment to the US Constitution granted Montana statehood making Kalispell one of the last states admitted into the Union on December 14th of that year along with Oregon and Nevada
