Kalispell, Montana is a town located in the Rocky Mountains of western Montana. It is bordered by Yellowstone National Park to the north, and the Kootenai River to the east. In 1876, settlers who had been forced out of their homes in Nebraska moved into what is now Kalispell after being driven out of that state by Indian raids. By 1880, the town had a population of 350 residents and prospered thanks to its natural resources including coal and timber. However, World War I destroyed much of these resources and led to an economic decline for Kalispell. In 1925, Kalispell became part of the new United States federal district covering all of Montana and Wyoming as well as all or part of Oregon, Idaho, Nevada and Arizona. This area was designated as an oil boomtown due to its potential for oil discovery on land with little environmental impact. However, production ceased shortly afterward because of technological advances and rising costs associated with drilling fluids and other equipment used in oil production. During Prohibition years (1920- 1933), bootlegging operations took place throughout eastern Montana using local water supplies to produce liquor from illegal distilleries unscathed by prohibition laws that prohibited alcohol consumption outside individual residences or businesses governed by county regulations prohibiting open alcoholic beverage sales without a license from proprietors over 21 years old.
