The first people to live in what is now Kalispell were the Hidatsa and their allies who settled there in 1807. They built what is now the courthouse and some other early buildings. The town was founded on July 4, 1881 by citizens of butte county who gathered to make a new home after losing their land to cattle drives south of Kalispell. The post office was established in 1883 and renamed Kalispell in 1902 after military general Philip Sheridan (1827-1896). When he became Ulysses S. Grant’s Secretary of War, he moved his headquarters from Chicago to Kalispell so that he could better manage all aspects of war with Mexico and its allies (). In 1907, Mrs. Sherman donated an acre (about 0.50 hectare) for use as a public square in downtown Kalispell – this square still stands today across from the old courthouse). A two-story school building and stable were also donated by Mrs. Sherman (). In 1915, residents voted to approve construction of a dam onthe Missoula River which would create water power for irrigation purposes; this dam still stands today as one of the most iconic landmarks in town! In 1923, students at nearby Missoula College staged a sit-in against racial discrimination at their high school while protesting against World War I ()); local businesses refused to sell food or gasoline to the protesters.)
