Helena, Montana is a small town located in the Great Basin Valley of Western Montana. The population was 2,912 at the 2010 census. Helena is the county seat of Gallatin County and is flanked by the states of Oregon to the north and Wyoming to the east. Helena's name comes from Helena Lake which was named for Lady Frances Woodbury, daughter of Major General James K. Woodbury. The first white man to arrive in what is now Helena was George A. Smith who built a cabin in 1876 on land that he had purchased from the Arikara Indian tribe. The town received its permanent form when it was incorporated as a city in 1907 by Republican Mayor John Waddell with help from local businessmen and civic leaders such as Jules Daly and Tom Fenton. The community rapidly grew due to its location, good schools, plentiful water resources, and easy access to transportation including two trainloads of passengers per day coming into town during the early 20th century. The oilfields were discovered in 1927 and began production soon after; however, Helena didn't experience rapid growth until after World War II when petroleum became an important factor in contemporary society. In recent years, however, downtown has experienced significant redevelopment which has helped revive some aspects of traditional commerce while providing new retail opportunities for residents throughout downtown area as well as along Main Street which runs through central Helena. Helena, Montana is a small town in the Great Plains of western Montana. The population was 711 at the 2010 census. Helena is one of four townships in Butte County and is bordered by the counties of Carbon, Franklin, and Wasatch to the east, southeast, and south respectively. The community was founded in 1881 by settlers from Dakota Territory who named it Helena after General George Armstrong Custer. Helena became a city in 1904 and remained so until 1959 when it lost its charter due to disagreements about municipal governance. The first white people to live in Helena were two families from Dakota Territory who arrived on horseback early in 1881. They named their new settlement "Helena" for General George Armstrong Custer, winner of the Battle of Little Bighorn as an officer with Ulysses S. Grant's army. The other families that moved here soon followed suit, and within a year or so all but two of the original settlers had relocated to Helena proper. By 1883 there were over twenty-five families living hereabouts; most came during or after Reconstruction following the American Civil War (1861–1865). The original downtown business district consisted only of a few stores and post office; today it encompasses several blocks including Main Street, Fourth Street corner Marshall Avenue, Battery Place Road north/south alley off First Street westward (formerly Third Street), Railroad Avenue westward (now Lamar Boulevard), Seventh Street eastward (now Main Street), Court House Square northeast corner Eighth Streets southwesterly (now Park Avenue) – all withinsight of each other on broad streets leading into downtown which crossed at various points including SecondStreet near present day Walmart headquarters; also included what are now homebuilders' lots located along Belknap Boulevard between Ninth and Tenth Streets just north of Interstate 83 Wilson’s Chapel Cemetery northwest corner Tenth Streets southeast corner Eleventh Streets facing Cache Valley National Monument northeast corner Twelfth Streets southwest corner Cathedral Drive eastward between I-84 & US 36A & Northgate Boulevard before becoming part of Butte County on January 1st 1889 when organized as Butte Township Coeur d’Alene City Council met at Hotel Roosevelt inside current day University Of Phoenix campus boundaries thereby annexing much more than did Helena Borough until 1959 when Butte County lost its charter effective date related to disagreements over municipal governance In 1905 citizens raised money through a referendum to establish a city government for Helena under control by an elected council composed entirelyof male citizens owning property within limits set forth therein plus one female citizen per block living outside those limits owned by her husband or guardian if she had any children living with her parentage no matter how young they were then voting age regardless if single or widowed then owner thereof paying poll tax equal to $1 per $100 assessed valuation voted against establishment as unelected city council meeting closed without making decision even though majority voted yes despite protestations from mayor who said he would run if elected
