Helena is a small town in Montana, United States. The population was 1,532 at the 2010 census. Helena is located in Addition County and is part of the Helena-MT Micropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Helena was first populated by the Crow Tribe of Native Americans. The first white person to live in what is now Helena was John Dickey, who founded Dickey’s Store in 1885. In 1902, local businessman George Armstrong Custer donated land for a public school and post office in what is now downtown Helena. The commercial district that developed around the two institutions became known as "Custer Square." In 1907, Helena hosted the world's first international air race between America's Wright brothers and Europe's Bleriot Brothers Racing cars. In 1911,a new wave of Italian immigrants arrived in Helena and started a grocery store on Main Street called Gambero’s Grocery & Cheese Station (now operated by Albertsons). It would be their second store in town; the original store was burned down by fire in 1903. Italian immigrants also organized an agricultural society which allowed them to lease land for crops and erect barns/houses which were used as homes until World War II when they all sold their plots back to the county for development purposes. The current city hall building was erected between 1915-1916 following a design by Norman Rockwell based on his painting "Dueling Angels" of American military pilots fighting against Germany during World War I flying over German territory with British planes providing cover nearby

However, the city's fortunes decreased again during the 1990s due to an increase in crime rates which led to declining population density along with financial troubles. Today, Helena is a small community with diminishing commercial prospects that is home to a handful of residents struggling through tough times.
