Helena, Montana is a town in Butte County, Montana, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Helena-Napoleon, MT Micropolitan Statistical Area. Helena is located on the Missouri River and its riverbanks are home to numerous fly fishing and waterfowl hunting opportunities. The Helena-Napoleon School District covers all of Butte County with more than 2,000 students in grades kindergarten through twelve. The first European settlers in Helena were two Norwegian men who prospected for gold near the current town site in 1878. They founded a store and Post Office there in 1879. A mill was built soon after and began production of flour, meal, sugar beet syrup, soap products and other items for local consumption. By 1889 the town had been renamed Helena after General John Custer during his march from Fort Benton to Little Bighorn where he lost many men during the Battle of Little Bighorn on July 25 that year. In 1893 an oil well was drilled by Pemmican Oil Company in what is now downtown Helena; this well became one of America's most important natural resources as it provided energy for development throughout much of the 20th century until it was finally shut down due to oil depletion in 1978. In 1907 Helena voters passed a $5 per capita tax to support public education; this fund remains unchanged today and provides funding for schools across Butte County as well as several dozen other districts statewide. On November 6th 1924 Douglas MacArthur became Commanding General of American Forces Europe when World War II began; he arrived at Camp David ('A' Force) on October 10th 1925 just days before Christmas Eve to take up his duties as commander general... On January 15th 1929 President Herbert Hoover signed into law Public Law No: 283 (37 Statutes at Large), which created Butte County Industrial Development Authority... On February 7th 1930 General James Van Fleet replaced MacArthur as Commanding Generalof American Forces Europe... The authority was redesignated Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force Europe on May 9th 1940 when World War II ended with Germany's surrender... In 1945 Lieutenant Colonel John Gorman assumed command of Allied Expeditionary Force Europe following Eisenhower's death On September 4teenth 1951 Ulysses S Grant Homestead National Monument opened followed by Glacier National Park on October 16th 1951

In 1916-17, Helena became one of four Sites Treaty Settlements (along with Pierreville (Nebraska), Great Falls (Montana), and Lewiston (Alaska)) between the United States government and Native American tribes after years of conflict over mining rights throughout central America. Helena experienced significant growth following World War II when demand for agricultural products increased due to changes in technology related to development in Defense industries such as jet propulsion systems. In 1949-50 local merchants established what would become known as "the Downtown Merchants Association" to promote downtown shopping opportunities which grew steadily through the years until it reached its peak in 1990 with over 2 million shoppers annually per capita according to city officials. By 2001 however retail development had slowed significantly due to changing market trends including suburban sprawl growth across surrounding counties which severed access to downtown businesses from key arterial streets leading northward into town center where most residential properties are located today including numerous hotels/motels/casinos along Interstate 80A near various major stores/restaurants within easy walking distance both inside & outside city limits
