The history of binoculars in Helena, Montana can be traced back to the early 1800s. At that time, there were no serious advances in technology and it was necessary for farmers to purchase binoculars to view their crops. The first known use of binoculars in Helena happened on July 25, 1868 when a group of men from Helena used them to look at a cattle herd they were farmer farming near present-day Glacier National Park. On October 3, 1892, Helena’s only Carnegie Library was dedicated with the help of local businessmen and citizens. The library was built on the site where today’s library building is located. That same year, Henry Hetzel founded the FIRST Telegraph Company in Helena and began transmitting messages across town using telescopic lenses. The first telescopic lens ever created was made by Hetzel and it consisted of a 7x50mm lens fitted with a 1/4 inch focuser. By 1896, Telesco had become an international company with branches throughout North America and Europe! In 1907, horology became an important industry in Montana thanks to innovations developed by Professor Alfred Wittek at Northern Illinois University (NUI). Wittek invented what is now called the “Wittekwatch” which could be worn as a watch or used as a periscope for viewing astronomical events. In 1928, NUI merged with its neighbor UI to form Purdue University which later merged again into Indiana University in 1970! During World War II, many local businesses contributed towards war production including Canfield Glass Works who produced military optics products such as telescopes and binoculars for the US military. After the war ended however, most local companies failed within 4 years due to economic conditions caused by inflationary forces within society at that time. However, one business that did survive during this difficult period was Pabst Brewing Company which became big enough after World War II to begin manufacturing beer outside of agriculture! In 1957-58, two members of the Ku Klux Klan came through town on their cross-country tour while wearing sunglasses while preaching hatred against all black people! This event quickly garnered statewide attention and led to increased law enforcement activity aroundtown; however nothing was done about it because most people thought it was funny! In 1961-62 we had some trouble with Jokers Anonymous who started coming into town dressed like Joker characters wearing masks! It seemed like everyone wanted something related thereto but nothing really got done about it because people just felt embarrassed by it all...
