The Newtown Arms Company (now the Riflesmith Arms company) manufactured rifles for the Helena Armory until the early 1970s. In 1973, John C. Hinton sold the business to a couple of his friends from college who continued to produce firearms there until 1984 when it closed down due to lack of demand for their products.
Helena, Montana is a town in the U.S. state of Montana. The population was 2,915 at the 2010 census. Helena is part of the Helena-Montana Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located in eastern Montanan County and includes all of the towns within its borders: Bigfork, Belknap, Butte, Deer Lodge, Elk City, Flynnville, Grand Forks and Higgins. The first Europeans to visit Helena were fur traders from Canada in 1805 who named it "Higgins". In 1864 United States forces besieged Fort Bridger on the Continental Divide near present-day Boise Valley; Helena garrisoned 650 men to help defend the fort but failed to protect it from an Indian attack that cost four lives and 20 wounded. The fort was abandoned in 1865 and renamed Fort Colfax after General John A. Macdonald's government which had taken over for Congress when Fort Bridger fell into disuse following its surrender by US soldiers at Great Sioux War (1868-1869). In 1862 US general James Kempton founded what became known as "the gold rush" in Montana Territory because he thought there might be gold hidden under the surface of the earth during wagon trips across bluffs above his territory seeking access to new water supplies west of Crow Agency on Wyoming's Yellowstone National Park property. By 1872 most Americans had left for greener pastures but a small group including Kempton and two friends decided to stay put and prospect for gold near present day Bigfork while others went further south along Idaho's Snake River into what is now Utah Territory. On July 15th 1870 five men laid claim to a parcel of land located east of present day Bigfork between Mount Rushmore National Monument and Highway 12; they called their discovery "Helena." The area soon became known as Helena after General George Armstrong Custer's last battle with Indians at Little Bighorn Ridge six miles north of town on October 6th 1876 where he lost his life after being captured by hostile Sioux warriors
