In 1892, Helena became the first city in Montana to establish a Ammunition Trust. The trust was established to manage and store ammunition for the state's military and law enforcement purposes. The trust also purchased ammunition from local merchants on an as-needed basis. The trust continued to operate until 1937. From 1937 to 1959, the trust operated out of the old Capitol Annex building on Broadway Street in downtown Helena. In 1959, the trust moved into its present location on 14th Avenue NW in downtown Helena. Since 1935, when the Helena Ammunition Trust was founded, it has been responsible for storing and distributing more than 1 million rounds of ammunition through its stores and outlets across western Montana. ThetrustToday employs nearly 120 people who work at four stores including one located outside of Missoula.
