The Great Falls Arsenal was established in 1876 as the first public armory in the United States. The facility was used for a variety of purposes, including arms production and storage, until it was closed in 1987. The Arsenal’s history is still remembered today through its collection of firearms and related memorabilia. In 1978, the Great Falls Chamber of Commerce initiated a project to preserve the Arsenal and its artifacts. The initiative resulted in the creation of the Great Falls Arsenal Museum. Today, the Museum offers visitors an opportunity to learn about firearms from museum staff, view historical exhibits on weapons production and storage at the Arsenal, listen to talks about gun laws in Great Falls during times past, and buy products from museum vendors.

Great Falls, Montana is a city in the United States. The population was 9,651 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Gallatin County. The Great Falls area has been inhabited by people for over 10,000 years and is one of the oldest continuously occupied counties in Montana. The first Europeans to visit Great Falls were fur traders who traveled upriver from St. Paul in 1805-06. The construction of the Lewis and Clark Expedition's rapids on the Missouri River in 1809 inspired James Kipp and his party to explore this region more fully in 1810-11. Pioneer Michael Hurd built Fort Hurd on the east bank of Great Falls Creek in 1822 as part of his efforts to seek out trade with Canada for goods brought downriver by steamboats from Minnesota and Illinois. A post office was established at Great Falls on July 1, 1825, under the name "Hurdtown". In 1859, during Waco Siege (1858), Confederate General John Custer unsuccessfully attempted to cross the Little Bighorn River near present-day Great Falls while leading his cavalry unit northward into Nebraska Territory seeking refuge from pursuing Union forces; he spent several days camped at nearby Garden City waiting for relief troops before retreating back across river before nightfall on November 16th due to lack of food or water supplies available within five miles (8 km) of him. In 1862–63, when Confederate General Jubal Early attacked Helena below Great Falls after crossing Missouri River northeast of Sweetwater Summit near present day White Sands Junction, early skirmishes took place between Union troops commanded by Major General Ulysses S Grant and Confederates under Robert Ewell at an unnamed location about two miles (3 km) upstream from where Fort Hurd now stands; all primary fighting stopped after morning prayers on November 11th due to Union superior firepower despite heavy casualties among both sides; thereafter intermittent skirmishing continued until approximately 3 p.m., when Grant ordered all troops back across Missouri River without further engagement until morning on November 12th; resulting Battle Of Fort Hurd – First Engagement resulted in 6 wounded Confederates killed plus 2000 additional captured men including Generals Early and Ewell – 150 total Union losses with 5 generals killed or mortally wounded; 5 prisoners taken including 2 officers: Ulysses S Grant US Army Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Carter US Army Captain John Gibbon Confederate Brigadier General William Tecumseh Sherman USArmy Ensign David Lilienthal 1st Infantry Regiment Kansas Volunteer Cavalry Colored Troops Unidentified Soldier
