Great Falls, Montana is a town in the Central Montana region of the United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. The Great Falls metropolitan area had a population of 15,422 as of July 2016. The name "Great Falls" was given to the falls by Colville Indians in 1872 because they thought it looked like great waterfalls on the Missouri River. The first white settlers arrived in Great Falls in 1871 and named it after their home city, Great Britain. In 1875, gold was discovered near Great Falls and soon traders and miners were traveling to the site for minerals and gold. By 1886, there were over 100 businesses operating in Great Falls with an estimated payroll of $30 million dollars yearly. In 1898, Congress appropriated $10 million for a new dam across the Missouri River to be built at Great Falls. Construction began in 1899 but stopped due to financial difficulties that year. When completed five years later, the dam became one of America's most important engineering feats and helped improve water supplies for millions of people throughout the Midwest and Northeast. The post-World War II boomtown found its heyday during the late 1940s through early 1950s when many veterans returning from World War II founded businesses such as Alcoa Aluminum Company (now Alcoa) andDuPont Chemical Company (now DuPont). However, since then much economic decline has followed as technological advances have made mining harder or less profitable while suburban development has encroached on downtown areas across from Interstate 90/US Highway 12 / US Highway 2 (the old main street). Despite this downturn however there are still many cultural icons associated with Great Falls including several successful restaurants such as LaBouffe & Co., Deere’s before it merged into John Deere Farms Corporation; Bemis Paper Products which manufactured wire mesh barriers until 1984; Northwest Airlines until it merged into AirTran Airways Inc.; jewelry store Tiffany & Co.; bakery Krusteys Bakery; High Country Clothing Store; Cascade Brewing Company owner Don Simpson died in 2018 aged 89 years old; Bobcat Brewery closed down operations in 2017 due to poor sales; local author Vernor Vinge died age 96 years old on September 26th 2019

Great Falls is a city in the U.S. state of Montana and the county seat of Butte County. The population was 44,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Great Falls, MT Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Townsite of Great Falls was platted in 1873 by A.P. Hill and Phebe Hanna as a sub-division off the main town site, located on the east bank of the Big Horn River about two miles upstream from its confluence withthe Missouri River. The original plat showed 12 blocks long and five wide with two streets running north-south each side and six streets east-west each way. sawmill Creek ran through what is now downtown Great Falls while an irrigation canal serviced a number of properties near by including present day Powers Ferry Road and Hastings Drive (now Broadway). The first post office was established in 1875, but it did not open until 1879 due to problems with getting mail to remote locations. In 1881, settlement began to grow around what would become Downtown Great Falls when John Smeaton opened his lumberyard just north of Main Street on what is now Powers Ferry Road west of US Highway 11 (later Interstate 90). At this time there were only three buildings in downtown: The Old Capitol Building built in 1861 as a jail; Union Pacific Depot which served as a stop for travelers coming downriver; and Smeaton's Lumberyard building which housed both his lumberyard operations as well as residences for managers and workers during most years before he sold property holdings to JH Horsburgh in 1903 CE. By 1901 there were over 100 businesses operating along renamed Powers Ferry Road including 25 banks, 30 stores, 10 hotels/motels, 4 doctors' offices/ clinics etc., making it one of America's largest commercial districts outside New York City or Boston metropolitan areas at that time! In 1906 ground was broken for what would eventually become Memorial Hall (later replaced by Great Falls State University) which would serve as great centralizing facility for all local government activity including education, civic functions such as elections etc., until demolition began in 1967 CE after years of neglect! The first classes were held on September 3rd 1907 using classrooms leased from Glacier Peak School District #2 where instruction continued until 1963 CE when improvements made by then rural school district superintendent Brewster resulted in opening up center into an "open learning environment" which continues today! On October 1st 1909 Wm Eller became contractor general manager responsible for all aspects related to construction projects beginning with erection of First Financial Building across street from current GREAT FALLS STATE UNIVERSITY brick building becoming reality despite many challenges faced by small community along route delivering world’s tallest free standing clocktower completed atop spire reaching 143’ 5/8” tall above lobby flooring on July 14th 1913!!! One could argue that Wm Eller may have been responsible more than anyone else for creating “Great Falls – A Place For All” culture & economy within community–an era defined by progressivism
