The first settlers in Great Falls were farmers and their families who arrived during the early 1800s when fur trappers came through this area searching for buffalo herds that had been driven off by Native Americans. After a few years, some men decided to start a wagon manufacturing business and soon there were several mills operating in Great Falls. In 1885, Andrew McNaught founded what would become one of the largest trucking companies in North America with his company GNMT trucks. The company has continued to operate until today with over 100 truckloads moving goods throughout North America each day! Today, many businesses have relocated or closed within Great Falls’ limits such as Microsoft (with its Redmond campus), GEICO (a provider of insurance services), Tyson’s Chicken (a fast food restaurant) and AIG Financial Corporation headquarters all located within less than two miles of each other! Additionally, several factories have closed down including Bechtel Corporation’s plant that produced engineering supplies before it shuttered in 2002; aluminum smelter operations closed down around 1990; Ryan-Bryan Paper Products Company closed their paper mill after only 10 years; lastly Steinmetz Rubber & Steel Products made their final run for production at their facility just outside of town in 2009 before ceasing operations altogether! Despite these closures, however, many old businesses have successfully kept alive such as Pawsitive Dog Bakery which continues to serve up hot dog buns fresh out of the oven every day since 1978; local homebrew brewery “Flaming Lips Brewery” has been open since 1997; local art galleries offer galleries with interesting displays as well as opportunity for tastings throughout most days; you can also find numerous convenience stores/grocery stores/bars/restaurants along main streets serving up typical American fare while providing an ATM service!! Despite much adversity over time, Main Street still retains its vibrant atmosphere full of historical landmarks and events from previous decades including car shows being held annually at Historic Main Street Park followed by antique vehicles show on Saturday nights according to recent schedule; life-sized characters from various children's books stationed throughout downtown stemming from 1994 when great falls communitywide campaign began promoting reading enthusiasm among citizens plus occasional appearances by popular authors etc.; annual powwow celebration featuring traditional Native American music & dance on Saturday night preceding provincial election weekend where residents come together to celebrate democracy & our right to be self-reliant etc.; even though smalltown life may not always be picture perfect it's infinitely more fulfilling knowing that we are responsible for making sure our community remains an important part of north central Montana

The primary purpose of these early settlers was farming; however, some began trading goods with Indian nations as well. By 1840, there were 9 families living here. They started out by building log cabins and selling them to fur traders travelling through this area on their way to Fort Benton or Stavanger on the Canadian side of the Rockies
