Great Falls, Montana is a city in east-central Montana and the county seat of Butte County. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. In 1871, commissioners met at Great Falls to create a new town site on land that had been donated by Custer's widow; the town would be named after her husband’s famous cavalry general—the first Native American chief to serve as head of an U.S military unit. In 1865, General George Armstrong Custer led his Seventh Cavalry Regiment through Butte County on their way to join General Sheridan's forces at Yuma River during the Mexican-American War. Post offices were established at Butte and Montrose in 1865; both towns survive today as part of Great Falls City limits. During World War II, various munitions factories were located in or adjacent to Great Falls; those installations produced materials for war production all across America until closing in the late 1950s. On July 1st 1908, butte County was organized into two districts (Butte and Gallatin). On November 6th 1912 Citizens of Butte District No 2 voted by referendum not to annex any other township within its boundaries because they felt that it would diminish their voting power within the great falls school district which was then being formed out of portions of two other districts (Butte District No 1 & 2). The annexation of any other township would have given local control over public schools within its borders….the citizens graciously allowed us our independence back! Great falls has had many different names throughout its history: Prospectors' Landing(1865), Fort Benton(1868), Indianola(1869), Garrison Heights(1906), Soil Winters(1910), Green Gables(* 1911), Old Mission Plaza(* 1912) & finally Great Falls City Limits* (1920).
