The first silver ore was found in Butte County by David Murdoch in 1868. By 1915, Butte had become one of America's leading silver mines with over 20 million ounces mined from its deposits alone. In 1916, butting against United States Bureau of Mines regulations that limited production to certain areas due to pollution concerns, Butte mine owner Harry Hutton Jr. developed an open-pit mine called the Golden Spike which became world-renowned for its producing quality and large yields. The town became known as "theSilverBow". In 1925, hutton sold his interest in the Golden Spike mine to Anglo American Corporation for $1 million cash plus $10 million worth of preferred stock which gave him control over all production at the mine until it was closed down by Anglo American Corporation in 1951 without any debt or loss to either party. Today, much of what remained at Golden Spike is still used to produce gold coins (and some still pour out water) as part of operations at nearby Flathead Lake National Recreation Area; while most other aspects have been abandoned or converted into apartments and hotels since then mainly because no new investments could be made once so much valuable land was left idle following World War II when mining revenues declined drastically throughout much of North America due to competition from more accessible resources such as copper and gold from Canada . However even today there are traces remaining including quarries where red argillite (a typeof quartz) is mined for building stone; mills where flour is ground into meal; a reservoir operated by the US Forest Service that stores water used during processing; a restaurant/bars pub/amusement park called Keystone Gold Mine Museum & Adventure Park serving food and drinks inside an old workingshoe pit complete with operating steam engine complies with all current safety requirements
