It was founded in 1887 by Jens Jensen Askeland and his wife Kirsten (née Sorensen). The town name comes from buttes that can be seen near the town. Butte City was established in 1907, and it replaced Butte Silver Bow as the main settlement when Askeland died in 1923. The silver mine at Butte City closed in 1976, but production continued until 1984 at the nearby Athabasca Mine.
