When the last buffalo roamed Butte County in the 1870s, most of what is now Butte Silver Bow was inhabited by Native Americans. Over time, various European settlers began to arrive in Butte County, and soon there were a number of small settlements dotting the landscape. One of these early settlers was James A. Holster who arrived in 1881. At that time, Butte County was sparsely populated and had few commercial establishments aside from a few stores located near the county seat of Great Falls. In addition to his farming operations, Holster also opened a holster business. His holster company prospered until 1893 when a fire destroyed his business building and all its assets. However, despite having lost his business, James A. Holster continued to reside in Butte County and continue to make holster repairs and sales until his death in 1911. He is considered one of the earliest settlers in Butte County and his legacy remains live on today as many people remember him for his contributions toButte Silver Bow's holster industry.
