In the 1920s, Butte's Chamber of Commerce started a canning company that used high-capacity canners. The company became successful, and soon began producing larger cans than ever before. By the 1940s, small companies were no longer able to produce high-capacity cans; large companies had taken over. Butte is a small town located in Butte County, Montana, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Butte County and the second-most populous city in Montana. The name of Butte comes from an Englishman named James Buchanan but his family moved to this area when he was born in 1864. The first silver mine near Butte was opened by a man named John Sutter in 1876. By 1901, there were six mines operating in Butte County; five of which were owned by foreign companies. In 1907, however, the federal government leased nearby Flathead Lake for $50 per acre to start mining operations for lead and silver. However, this venture failed and the mine closed within two years. In 1916–17, a group of men led by Captain Harry Hastings set up camp on Rosebud Creek to prospect for gold while they awaited approval from the US Geological Survey to build a road into their new territory: Big Hole Gulch (later called Devil’s Gate). On July 16th 1917 they discovered what has been hailed as one of the greatest discoveries ever made when they struck strike rich with placer gold worth an estimated $1 million dollars! This event caused such excitement that miners flocked to Big Hole Gulch where they continued pounding away at the earth until 1951 when all vestiges of it had been removed by technological advances! This particular discovery sparked off a manned exploration campaign over several months that culminated with Major General Royce Hill’s daring crossing of Hell’s Gate Pass on November 17th 1919 after reaching an altitude of 10 kilometers above ground level! He became only the third person to walk across North America without assistance other than dogs since Europeans had crossed more than 50 times before him! After finding no significant gold deposits at Big Hole Gulch or any other location within its borders, Captain Hastings abandoned his claims there and returned back home on December 15th 1920 having found over 5 square miles (15 km²) worth of strikes but none yet containing valuable ore! Today buttes are some of most popular tourist destinations due to their natural beauty as well as their beautiful scenery including mountains ranges such as The Absaroka Mountains and Rocky Mountains
