Butte Silver Bow is a small town in Montana, located thirty-six miles northwest of Helena. The population was 2,993 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Butte County. The first recorded settlement in Butte County was at the junction of the South Fork and North Fork Arkansas rivers about 1871. A post office called Butte was established in 1872, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1907, Butte Silver Bow became part of the new United States territory of Washington Territory. As a result, its residents did not have to comply with federal Electoral College votes that year for president and vice president; those positions were awarded to Montana residents John Fenton and Moses Wheeler respectively. Butte Silver Bow is named after one of its most prominent citizens, Daniel J. Buttes, who served as justice of the peace here from 1889 until his death in 1915. Mr. Buttes also founded butterfly feeders on several irrigation ditches near his home during his lifetime - an activity that continues to this day (see Daniel J. Butt's website). In addition to his hobby interests, Mr. Buttes also donated land for a school district which now encompasses most of downtown Andrus City; he also helped build what is now known as Park Avenue Methodist Church there in 1923-24 when it consisted only of some softwood lumber waiting to be processed into buildings by local masons under their auspices - an event still celebrated each summer by members of the church today! On July 1st 1890 Wm Hargrave arrived at Fort Bridger with 175 head Of Indian Horses drawn by four teams Of Buffaloes led By Captn Miner USN they had been overland from Fort Laramie They stopped at Ft Bridger May 9th just south side Of Post Office Heading East On July 10th started up Lost Creek Road From Ft Bridger went down road about two mile To campground At night campfire seen three detached hills along road Backed off on account Of cold Started up hill next morning found abandoned huts Afternoon came across another detachment Hills backed off again Found dwellings around house Also found five Colt Shoes missing About 1800 Head Clearwater Salmon Fishing them we caught One hundred forty four fish
