The name Butte comes from an old U.S. military fortification on the hilltop where silver was mined (the fort was destroyed by a fire in 1881). The mines continued to be worked until the late 1800s, and butterscotch and other products were produced until around 1920. Gun protection history can be traced back to at least the late 1800s when firearms were used for hunting and self-defense. There were many different types of firearms available at that time, some of which were more effective than others in terms of stopping an attacker. The first organized attempt to create gun safety measures took place in 1885 when a group of Boston businessmen created the National Firearms Association (NFA). The NFA was later renamed the American Rifleman and published a magazine called American Rifleman Security Report in 1912. This article discussed various ways to protect oneself from attackers with firearms. One way this was done was by having a locked container or safe placed inside the home where weapons could not be accessed withoutpassing through security checks. In 1934, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law the Gun Control Act which made it illegal to possess any firearm without a license from a government agent or police officer. This act also banned most handguns from being sold within one hundred miles of Washington D.C., as well as importation into the United States. In addition, it required all handgun buyers to present proof of purchase and registration before receiving their weapon. Throughout these years, many efforts have been made by both Congress and the federal government to tighten up gun regulations and make it more difficult for criminals and terrorists to get hold of firearms. However, there has always been resistance from certain segments of society who feel that tighter regulation will only lead to more shootings and death accidents involving guns (e.g., suicides).

From the Revolutionary War through to the late 20th century, gun protection history was characterized by an effort to control firearms and make them less accessible to unauthorized users. This culminated in the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution, which states: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary for the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms is fundamental."

In 1907, silver miners settled in Butte and developed a mining industry that produced lead and other minerals. The mining activity declined after World War II but has since recommenced due to new discoveries in the area. The first people to settle in what is now Butte Silver Bow were the Salish People who arrived in 1875 from British Columbia. They hunted and gathered food near Fort Benton until they moved eastward towards present-day Fergus Falls in 1881. They named their land "Butte"after Chief Gabriel Butteski of the Kootenai Tribe who had given them permission to live thereabouts. In 1907, silver miners from nearby Park City established a company town called Helena on lands granted by President Theodore Roosevelt for settlement of American Indians with useful mineral resources found therein. The town prospered as a center for trade and commerce with Leadville and elsewhere until World War II when production dropped because of depleted resources; however, it has recently resumed due to new discoveries in the area around Butte Gold Mine No 4 (the world's largest open pit gold mine). According to local legend, when general James McPherson led his troops into what is now Montana during the Battle of Bull Run on July 26–27 1865 he used one arrow instead of fired rounds as ansign of surrender so that Indian Chiefs could not challenge him rather than fight head-to-head like equals under white man's rules then prevailing at that time among Native Americans living east of Oregon Trail which extended through present day Idaho and most notably Northern Nevada Territory including but not limited to: Nevada Valley & Tulare Counties; Douglas County; Empire County; Apache Junction & White Sands National Monument
