In 1886, Andrew Jackson became president of the United States and issued Executive Order 9227 calling for copper mining to be developed within ten miles (16 km) of Great Falls so as to promote economic growth around the region. This order led to development ofSilver Bow Canyon as one of America's leading copper mining areas -1 million tons (1,500 metric tonnes) were mined here between 1901-1910! It wasn't until 1949 when butane gas explosive became available that silvermining operations began at Butte Silver Bow; this Eventually led to its decline as a result of environmental concerns about mercury emissions from these operations over time
